Lilbern Washington & Thrusa Chapman
I have included three different stories written by Dad, his sister Alta and younger brother Lilburn They certainly give different views of their early life. But this we know about our Grandpa. He was born December 8, 1869 in Malta Bend, Saline County, Missouri. Before he was three his mother died, then when he was around ten he was in an accident breaking his back. It was not set correctly and left him crippled such that he grew to less than five feet and weighed less than 100 pounds. But this did not seem to slow him down in life. When he was about twelve his father died, and he along with his older brother John were passed around to relatives to raise. In short time - by the time Lilbern was sixteen - they struck out on their own.
Grandmother Thrusa was not having much of an easier time either. When her parents divorced, her mother had custody of the children given to her by the court. Her father stole her and her two brothers and ran away to Arizona, which wasnt a state yet. When her father remarried, Thrusa was used for caring for the children and house work, not a happy life for her. Somehow she was able to locate her mother, who had remarried by then, and her mother sent her money to go back to Missouri. Thrusa went although her father was very angry at her.

Grandpa by this time had done a variety of different jobs. He had a small amount of education and was a smart man. He lived in Oklahoma Territory by now, and what he told in later stories, with an outlaw John Shirley, was a Deputy and a Court Clerk. He and his older brother John inherited $1400.00 from an aunt, and when he went back to Missouri to collect it, he met Thrusa. He must have been a charmer to, for he bought a wagon, mules and supplies and along with Thrusa, they stop in Muskogee, OK and got married November 30, 1897. Grandpa was 29 and Grandmother was sixteen.
-<+>-The lived in Coweta, and their five children were born to them. The tragedy of their first two sons dying as babies from fever, left dad the oldest and they moved in town, grandmother fearful of losing him. They lived about eleven years in Coweta, but was hearing from Thrusa father in Arizona how things were booming. So about 1912 or 1913, they moved to Globe, Arizona. From all the older children, there is no doubt the six years they lived there were the happiest of their lives. Grandpa had a good job, the had a nice house in town and things went very well until the miners went on strike. They had one daughter in Globe, the last two children were born in Oklahoma where because of trouble of the strike, they returned. There they had a small farm, life was hard and the older children soon left home.
It was in the 1930's that the trek of the Chapmans started west to California, ours was the last to leave Oklahoma in 1939.
