The answers are "UA" for Union Army, "UN" for Union Navy, "CA" for Confederate Army, and "CN" for Confederate Navy. These clues lead to military service and pension records. You can gain access to Civil War service records from the Nation Archives and Records Administration. Visit their web site at: http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/civilwar.html *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Stuck at a brick wall? Consider all of these different types of resources: 1. Vital Records - Birth, marriage and death records. 2. Church Records - Baptism, christening, marriage and death records, 3. Census Records - Keep in mind that some families were missed by the census takers. 4. Newspapers - Births, marriages, obituaries, public notices. 5. Family Sources - Family bibles, letters, diaries, interviews. 6. Cemetery Records - Family members were often buried together. 7. Land Records - Deeds, land grant records, land patents, etc. 8. Wills/Probates - Such documents often list heir's names. Still stuck? After exhausting the above resources, think about researching siblings, step-siblings, cousins and even neighbors. You may be surprised to find a connection! *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* ONLINE "HUNTING" TIPS Amazon.com - They have a section for Genealogy - Online books.
