Welcome to the

Joel Dire CHAPMAN, my husband’s great-great-grandfather, was an intriguing person and an ancestor that we would like to learn more about, especially his background.
He was born on 9 Mar 1818 but his birthplace and parentage are a mystery. The 1850 U.S. census lists Joel’s place of birth as Mississippi. The 1860 U.S. census cites Kentucky. The 1870 census lists Illinois. The 1880 U.S. census mentions Kentucky again and lists Joel’s parents as being from Virginia.
According to one source, Joel and his family came to Jackson County, Illinois in 1844 from Mississippi. In 1845 Joel had signed a Jackson County School Petition. Later he had purchased land in Jackson County. The date was 2 Oct 1847 and he bought 40 acres at $1.25 an acre. The total price was $50. He continued to purchase land, 40 acres at a time, in the years 1853, 1863, 1866, 1869, 1878 and 1885, paying various prices. Based on these records, he owned 300 acres. The land was in section 26, township 9 south, range 1 west, about a mile southeast of Carbondale. Joel obviously was a farmer and the property was known as the Joel CHAPMAN homestead. He also purchased 3 lots in the E. Ferrill subdivision in Carbondale, Jackson County, Illinois.
Joel was married five times. The name of his first wife and the details of the marriage are not known, but he arrived in Illinois with a daughter named Adeline. According to the 1850 U.S. census, Adeline was born in 1841 in Mississippi.
Joel’s second wife was M. McCORMICK. She is not included in the 1850 census, which lists her daughters, Jane (Jennie), who was born in 1847 in Illinois, and Minerva, who was born in 1848 in Illinois.
The 1850 census lists Joe’s third wife. Some sources say her name was Lucinda C. ROGERS and others cite her name as Durinda. I think this is a matter of interpretation of the handwriting on the marriage certificate. (The photocopy which I have is of very poor quality and difficult to read.) This union resulted in another daughter, Elizabeth, who was born in 1850.
On 5 Mar 1855, in Jackson County, Joel wed his fourth wife, Rachel E. CHILDERS, the daughter of James C. and Sarah (HIGHTOWER) CHILDERS. Four children were added to the family. John CHAPMAN, who was born in 1858, is listed in the 1860 U.S. census, but not in later ones, so he possibly died while young. Another son, born 6 Jun 1860, was named Lewis Marshall CHAPMAN. Then came two daughters, Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" in 1864 and Sarah I, born 9 Jul 1871.
Joel’s fifth wife was Mary Ann ACHLEY and the ceremony took place in Jackson County on 24 Aug 1873. Five children were born to Joel and Mary: Donna, Blanche, Allie, Joel Dire Jr. and Hayden. In 1896, it was indicated that the marriage ended in divorce and, with her children, Mary moved to Union County, Illinois.
In the 1880 Jackson County, Ilinois, census, listed with Joel’s family, there was a Robert CHAPMAN, a nephew, age 23, working on the farm. He was born in Louisiana and his father was born in Kentucky. In that same census, living near Joel’s family, the following family was listed:
CHAPMAN John 65 KY VA VA
Cauzadia wife 37 IL TN TN
Daniel son 22 LA KY ?
John A. son 35 MO KY MO
Thomas son 17 LA KY MO
Joseph son 20 LA KY MO
HURLEY Ellen step-dau 11 IL TN IL
CHAPMAN D. W. son 5 IL TN IL
Vincent son 3 IL TN IL
I believe that Robert CHAPMAN, Joel’s nephew, was a member of this family, which means that John CHAPMAN was probably Joel’s brother. Cauzadia must have been a second wife. Another possible sibling of Joel was seen on the 1860 census of Jackson County, viz.: Daniel CHAPMAN, age 33, and a farmer, was listed with Joel CHAPMAN and his family.
On 22 Aug 1895, Joel CHAPMAN gave his daughters, Sarah TOLER and Mollie SULLIVAN, the following: "our span of mules called Pete and Jack, Pete is about 12 years old and Jack is about 5 years old, also our cow and calf called Hef, also our cow called Daisy with young calf, also our cow called Jersey with young calf." In another letter witnessed the same day, Joel gave the sisters, "our black horse called Grover, white spot on his forehead, about 9 years old, one set of buggy harness and our buggy for value received." Joel did "reserve the right to use of said horse, buggy and harness at any time for my…personal convenience."
After his wife Mary and her children left, about 1891, his daughter Minerva and her husband moved onto the Chapman homestead. On 13 Sep 1895, Joel notified Minerva and her husband, A. B. BRANSON, that they should vacate his home. They obviously chose not to move and subsequently, there was a hearing on the case on 12 Oct 1895. The following excerpt is taken from the court report.
"My name is Joel D. CHAPMAN my age 78 years the 9th day of March 1896. I am the plantiff in the above cause. I know the defendants A. B. Branson and Minerva Branson. I know and am {not legible} with the Joel Chapman farm. I lived on said farm about 51 years it is in sec 26 town 9 south range 1 west 3rd PM Jackson County, Ill. The homestead thereon is now occupied by A. B. Branson and Minerva Branson the defendants herein. (That is to say the dwelling house on said farm)
He came there when my folks left to take care of the place and was to leave when we disagreed. I mean by my folks my wife and little children. Mrs. BRANSON is my daughter and Mr. BRANSON is my son in law. There was nothing said as to how long they should stay except they should stay as long as we could agree and when we disagreed they were to go somewhere else. I had teams and farming utensils on the place to tend the farm which Mr. BRANSON was to use on the farm. We disagreed several times and last winter I told him he should get him another place. I didn’t want him there any longer. It was December I think that I so told him. It was then he was gathering corn anyway. They no right to stay there any longer than they could get a house to go to. I didn’t give him any more ground to tend after that time. He put in some wheat without renting the ground or anything before that time he didn’t leave when I told him to leave. He was hauling his own corn and mine together. I reason I didn’t want him to haul away the corn it belonged there and I had to buy corn in place of it. I don’t consider they have any right to live in that house now. They have had no lease on that house since I told BRANSON to get away from it last winter."
Cross Examination.
"Mr. BRANSON went on the place or in the house 4 years ago last Sept. His lease began at that time. He has not farmed on the place one half the time he raised no crop this year only a little wheat and he had 15 or 16 acres of wheat there this year. He took care partly of my teams and cows (his family took care of them the balance of the time, that is the cows) I tolde him to go there and make all he could there was teams and plows and stock all there ready and the more he could make off of the farm, the more for him so its more for me he stayed there from year to year until I gave him notice to quit last winter. I tolde him last December to get another place. I harvested the wheat that was grown last fall though I didn’t agree to."
Re Direct Examination
"I paid for the seed wheat that was sown last fall. I tolde Mr. BRANSON to go to Stearns and get the wheat. That was the last crop he has put in on the farm. I made the contract with BRANSON about living on the farm. I don’t know that any one was present when the contract was made. Mr. BRANSON was living in my house here in town when the contract was made (that is in Carbondale, Ill.) He was not paying rent for the house he lived in I didn’t charge him any rent. Let him have it for accomodation when BRANSON moved on the Farm my things were all there and has been untill recently when BRANSON moved on the Farm I had bureau and one bed that I slept on my self, 2 mattreses and cook stove. And everything I had for keeping house was there. That place I kept as my home I didn’t give it rife and go off. I just allowed Mr. BRANSON come there to stay as long as we could agree. Last winter when I gave him my notice to leave I meant for him to leave. When they moved in I was in court and when I came home BRANSON and his wife were there in the house. I made no agreement with Mrs. Branson. She went in with him. I furnished more provisions than I used. Part of the time we all eat together and part of the time I eat by my self. I furnished 1350 lbs flour and four gal molases and nine head hoggs that would average about 200 lbs. I eat on a little table to my self when I was unable to go to the table with the family. I furnished other provisions beside what I have mentioned such as fruits milk and butter. Mr. BRANSON had no stock of any kind when he moved on the place that I have seen. He brought no stock there and he had none. He had no home of his own. (Objected to) He had no particular employment when he went to my place that I know of. (Objected to) We lived together in my house on my farm as a family. They were to live there as long as we could agree together and get along. I have not been in the house for about three months."
Re cross examination.
"There was nothing said about a year. I made no bargain with Mr. Branson that he should stay on the place a year at all. I lived with Mr. Branson from Sept 1891 until about 3 months ago but BRANSON hasn’t tended any ground for a year on that place. The notice I gave Mr. BRANSON to leave last winter was a verbal notice"
Redirect Ex:
"Mr. BRANSON and I have lived together from Sept 1891 until about 3 months ago under the agreement that I have already mentioned."

According to Lewis CHAPMAN, on "July (17th) 95 accident to father—poor eyesight—hearing bad." This accident happened a few months before Joel had the disagreement with his daughter Minerva and her husband. Later Dr. LIGHTFOOT was quoted, "hip fracture & bruises, nothing wrong with mind until 2 or 3 days before death." His daughter Sarah (CHAPMAN) TOLER cared for him during his last illness.
On July 19, 1896, Joel Dire CHAPMAN died in Carbondale, Jackson County, Illinois. Though there is no marker, he is buried in the Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale, Jackson County, Illinois. Sarah (CHAPMAN) TOLER purchased a lot in the Oakland Cemetery the day after he died.
