Census Index Iowa - by County

The following is a study in the evolution of Iowa Chapman families from 1840 (first census of Iowa) through 1870. The data used is the census indexes and the data is displayed by county. Within county the names are listed first by census year and then by Chapman name.

The creation year of the counties is important to the study. In some cases the Chapmans will be found in an earlier census in one of the parent counties.

A companion list in alphabetical order by Chapman name is also available here.

The data displayed is the Chapman household head name, the census year, the page of the microfilm where more data may be found and the township or other political subdivision, if one was listed. In 1870 some of those listed may not be family heads because the source also listed adults over a certain age regardless of family relationship.
