1850 Census UT
Census Volunteers
At the CFA Convention in May quite a few members volunteered to assist with census extraction. This is the first results from that. Kathleen Tovar volunteered to extract data from 1850 UT, IA & CA and has indicated she wants to continue beyond that. Others who want to help with the Chapman census need to contact the CFA Corresponding Secretary - address on page 2 - for an assignment and instructions. Help is need for most of 1830 and subsequent years.
About the 1850 Utah Census
As most readers know the 1850 census was the first of the census schedules to list the name of every person in a household. For most states "Census Day" was June 1, 1850. Utah was not even established as a territory until September 1850. The census of the territory was taken in April and May 1851 with "Census Day" being April 1, 1851. Although there were 11,380 subjects included in this census the territory was not at all well organized. Some of those in Weber County were actually at Fort Bridger which is present day Wyoming. No Chapmans were involved. All of the islands in the Great Salt Lake were attached to Great Salt Lake/Salt Lake County until 1880. For a time beginning around 1851 and ending before 1870 there was a Desert (Not Deseret) County west of the lower half of the Great Salt Lake. By 1870 it was part of Tooele County. It was not organized and generally recognized as having no population. It was probably that area where those listed below as born "Salt Lake Desert" were born.
Data extracted by Kathleen Tovar.
Computer input by Kathleen Tovar.
Arranged by county, and dwelling as enumerated.
For most subjects the age is expressed in years immediately after the sex entry. In some cases - particularly with infants - the age is expressed in months in which case the age column is blank. The age- when expressed in months - is in the seldom used column immediately after age.
CYOB or circa year of birth is not from the census. It has been added to assist CFA researchers. It was calculated by the computer subtracting age from 1851.
Color is shown after the circa year of birth. It is assumed to be white unless otherwise specified.
Birthplace is shown with the approved postal abbreviations for states in the U.S Foreign places were abbreviated as follows: EN = England, CD = Canada.
In 1850 the Federal Census began to collect much more information than in any previous census. Some of the data is in information columns after BP. The information is coded as follows:
S = in school this year. M = married in the census year. R = can't read and/or write
Column headings not meant to line up exactly over the data but rather to give position relationship
