1800 Census OHThe map differences alluded to at the beginning of this article seem most pronounced in Ohio. This can be expected because of the very dynamic nature of the geography in the Northwest Territory for the period 1800-1810. In addition to the usual county boundary changes there was the influence of the Connecticut Western Reserve in the northeast in what became Trumbull County and the Indian lands in the northwest.
Adams County: John Chapman was taxed there in 1806, 1808 and 1809.
Athens County which was part of Washington in 1800 had David Chapman on 1808 tax records.
Butler County which was part of Hamilton in 1800 had John Chapman on 1807 tax lists
Clermont County which was created from Hamilton in 1800 had Henry Chapman and Zachariah Chapman on tax records in 1806 and Edward Chapman, Edward Chapman Jr., and Henry Chapman on tax records of 1809.
Columbiana County which was part of Jefferson in 1800 had Joseph Chapman on 1809 tax records.
Fairfield County which was part of Ross and Washington County in 1800 had tax records on Levi Chapman in 1808.

Hamilton County had a William Chapman on Dayton township tax records of 1798 and a petitioners list in 1799. Elijah Chapman was also on the 1799 petitioners list.
Highland County was part of Ross and Hamilton Counties in 1800. In 1806 Isaac Chapman was on tax records there and in 1808-09 he was on tax records of New Market Township of that county. David Chapman appeared on the New Market Township tax records of 1807-09.
Muskingum County was part of Washington County in 1800. Elijah Chapman, George Chapman and John Chapman were on the tax rolls there in 1806, 07 and 08. In 1808 a Stephen Chapman was taxed in the 4th district. John Chapman and Levi Chapman were taxed there in 1809.
Portage County was part of Trumbull County and Indian Lands in 1800. In 1809 Beman Chapman, Christer Chapman, Ephraim Chapman and Nathan Chapman, Jr. were taxed there.
Trumbull County had been part of the Connecticut Western Reserve until Connecticut ceded it in May 1800. In 1806 Ephraim and Nathan Chapman were taxed in the 6 th collection district. In 1807 there were tax records for Abisha Chapman, Nathan Chapman, Jr., Nathaniel Chapman, and William Chapman. Abisha Chapman, Ephraim Chapman. Nathan Chapman, Nathaniel Chapman and William Chapman were taxed in 1808. William Chapman was also taxed there in 1809.
Washington County was the only county for which census records were preserved. Our data does not contain any age tabulations for this county but there are indications that a Chapman whose first name is not given was in Newton Township, an Ezra and/or Ezry in Gallipolis Township, and Isaac, Joseph and Levi in Allen Township in 1800. In 1803 there is record in Salem township of Hezekiah Chapman, Isaac Chapman, Joseph Chapman, Levi Chapman and Levi Chapman, Jr. Ezra Chapman was listed several times in 1808 Adams Township as was Joseph Chapman and Levi Chapman who was in Salem Township (duplication suspected). Hezekiah was also in Salem Township. In 1809 Isaac Chapman was taxed in Fearing Township and Levi in Salem Township.
