1790 South Carolina Census

South Carolina was established as the 8th state in 1788. The population in 1790 was 249, 073. Chapmans numbered 120 in the state and they were comprised of 30 males age 16 or more, 38 younger males, 54 females, no other free persons and 90 slaves. Most of the slaves where in three families and one of them was headed by a female.

The 1790 census was prolonged until 1792. It used seven districts: Ninety Six, Camden, Cheraws, Orangeburg, Georgetown, Charleston, and Beaufort. Camden, Cheraws, and Ninety Six districts used their county subdivisions. Beaufort District did not use subdivisions in 1790 because counties were not functioning as such in 1790. Although Orangeburg had four counties in 1792 they were not used for the census. Instead the district was divided into north and south and that division was used for the census. Georgetown used parish bounds for the census. The parishes were: Prince Fredericks, All Saints, and Prince Georges-Winyaw. Likewise, Charleston used parishes which were: St. Stephens, St. James Santee, St. Johns Berkley, St. Thomas/St. Denis, Christ Church, St. James Goose Creek, Michaels (in the city of Charleston), St. Phillips (in the city of Charleston), St. Georges Dorchester, St. Andrews, St. Johns Colleton, St. Pauls, and St. Bartholomews.

Explanation for Census Headings:

The number at the left of the name is just a number assigned for our reference. It's the Chapman Number. If you need to write about an entry that is the best identifier. After the name the first two columns are males subjects- age 16 and above or less than 16. The third column is a count of the females regardless of age. The fourth column labeled is for other free subjects. The third to last column is for a count of slaves and the next column is total white persons. The last number is the census page number and finally there is a township or district when appropriate.
