Originally published in the Chapman Family Association Quarterly and some comments will relate to that.
In the last issue we provided you with what some call the Colonial census or the pre 1790 Census Index. In this issue is the first federal census which was taken in 1790. There was a limited tabulation of persons in each household. The heading on each page shows what the various numbers mean. The number at the left of the name is just a number assigned for our reference. It's the Chapman Number. If you need to write about an entry that is the best identifier. After the name the first two columns are males subjects- age 16 and above or less than 16. The third column is a count of the females regardless of age. The fourth column labeled is for other free subjects. The third to last column is for a count of slaves and the next column is total white persons. The last number is the census page number and finally there is a township or district when appropriate.
To further our association objectives we ought to expand on this census data by further identifying the subjects. Some can be related to published genealogies, to Revolutionary War records, to your research, etc. If you will provide us feed back on those subjects you know we will add that data to this file and as we progress will make the file available to you and others who have need. If you can relate one of those listed in 1790 to one in the pre 1790 data in the last issue - or identify one in the last issue - please do so. All you need to do is report the Chapman number (number to left of name) of the subject, your identification and the source of your information.
There were some unusual circumstances with some of the state censuses and notations will be found with the state tabulation below. The 1790 census was lost for the states of Kentucky, Delaware, Georgia, New Jersey and Virginia. Some county data was also lost in Maryland and North Carolina and were reconstructed from tax lists.
The totals shown for Chapmans in the introductory narratives for each state were taken from a different file than the one listed here. There may be a slight difference in some cases.
Below you will find a list of the Census where Chapmans are listed. Click on the link to go to the page for each state.

CFA Census InformationUnless otherwise specified- all CFA census information is unverified. That means one person visited the microfilm, or some other source, and extracted the data. That information was processed into the CFA data base without a second party revisiting the microfilm to verify that the extraction and initial computer input were correct.
If you have worked with any of the data and have an accurate transcript of a census microfilm then you can serve as our verifier. Please either send your data to CFA@chapmanfamilies.org or report that the data as shown is correct.
If you are willing to take on a verification task from scratch then you may take any of the posted CFA census units- or a part of a unit- and check it against the microfilm and report the correction or verification.
Perhaps you would be willing to extract data for which CFA has no transcripts. See the possibilities on several CFA web site census pages or send your offer to CFA@chapmanfamilies.org.
