J. D. CHAPMAN DIED FRIDAY.
Civil War Veteran Succumbed After 15 Weeks Serious Illness - Funeral Today.John D. Chapman, 78 years of age, a veteran of the Civil War, died Friday afternoon at five o'clock at his residence, 1300 South Fourth Street. He passed away after fifteen weeks of serious ill- ness and ill health for several years. His death resulted from complications.
Mr. Chapman moved to Atchison, to the place where he died, in 1917. Prior to that time, he lived on farms near Atchison.
He was born near McFall, in Davis(sic) county, Mo., December 21, 1847. Mr. Chapman was married to Miss Josephine Morris on January 13, 1867. Nine children were born to them, of whom four sons are living: George & Wiley Chapman of Leoti, Ks; Ode Chapman of Boise, Idaho and Dudley Chapman of Wichita Falls, Texas. Mrs. Chapman died November 16, 1899. Mr. Chapman and his family moved to Atchison county, to a farm south of Atchison, in 1894. He was married to Emma Clem on January 15, 1902. A son born to them, Eldon, is at home. Mrs Chapman also survives and a sister, Mrs. Nancy Breuer lives at McFall, Mo.
Mr. Chapman served for about a year in the Union Army before he was forced to leave the service after having contracted cholera. He was with Company F of the 43d Missouri Infantry.
The body is at the Stanton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at Stanton's this afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock and will be conducted by the Rev. Wallace Bacon. Interment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Pall bearers will be T.P. Armstrong, Lute Davenport, Gail Trimble, John Wilson, Hank Berry and C.C. Leighton.
