Ethel Chapman Day Mellum , 96, a native Washingtonian who taught in the D.C. public schools and later worked in the Office of the Adjutant General of the Army, died of respiratory failure Nov. 2 at Holy Cross Hospital.

Mrs. Mellum graduated from the old Central High School and the old Wilson Normal School. She taught in the elementary grades of the D.C. school system until this country entered World War I. She then went to work at the old War Department.

In 1923 she married Oliver H. Mellum. They lived in Chicago where Mrs. Mellum was a substitute teacher. Following her husband's death in 1936 she returned here. In 1941, she went back to work at the , War Department. She retired from the Adjutant General's Office in 1953.

Mrs. Mellum lived in Silver Spring with her daughter, Charlotte M. Dugan, who survives her. Other survivors include four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
